Bates began his career as an intern for Parsons Capital Management right before pursuing his Masters in Finance. While pursuing his Masters, he was selected by his class to be the portfolio manager of the student-managed Marsico fund, during which he was responsible for managing the various sector analysts and leading the investment decision-making process. While in graduate school, he simultaneously worked as an investment analyst intern at Investment Management Associates, an RIA in Denver with a dedicated value strategy in equities. While at IMA, he was responsible for in-depth research, securities valuation and ad hoc analysis in direct support of the Chief Investment Officer. After earning his Masters, Bates worked at Capital Value Advisors, an investment bank in Denver. While at CVA, he was responsible for supporting sell-side M&A transactions and valuation engagements for lower middle-market businesses. During his time as an investment banker, he served clients in a variety of industries including food/beverage, distribution, manufacturing, software/IT, healthcare & education services and specialty contracting. Bates graduated from the Pomfret School and earned both his BSBA in Business and his MS in Finance from the University of Denver. He currently serves on the Gordon School Investment Committee and is the active treasurer of the Fishers Island Sportsman’s Club.
